Real Wedding: Blaine & Ryan get married in Tampa, FL

Blaine and Ryan recently tied the knot in a front-yard wedding ceremony at a private residence in Tampa, FL. Not only did the beautiful home overlook the bay, the property was covered with gorgeous garden areas and large oak trees. I could not have dreamt of a more perfect setting for a wedding ceremony! The reception was held at the historic Tampa Firefighters Museum, which was just so fitting for a Groom who is a fireman (like Ryan).

For thier overall wedding design, the couple chose to accent the color black with various metallics and soft shades of pink. Along with gold place settings and chiavari chairs, an abundance of Mercury glass was incorporated into each table design. Blaine's bridesmaids wore a dress of their choice, which were all in the champagne/gold "family." I personally LOVE this idea and thought that it looked amazing.

What a FUN wedding this turned out to be! As you can tell from the photos, Blaine and Ryan are ALL ABOUT the laughs....which is right up my alley. Best wishes to this incredible couple!

Destination Wedding Dresses

We are currently working on another (out of the Country) destination wedding. Love those! One thing that always comes up for these particular brides is "What should I wear?" A majority of destination weddings take place in a Tropical, beach-like location which implies a more casual feel for the event. Of course, the attire should match the setting of the wedding. (Hey, that rhymes)! The weather, specifically the temperature, should also be considered when choosing a wedding gown style...especially if the festivities will be taking place outdoors. Some brides prefer a short gown whereas others prefer a long, yet light-weight gown. Both options are fine. It's all about what you (the bride) feels the most comfortable wearing.

The Holiday Season is a very popular time for engagements. If you are one of the lucky couples, CONGRATULATIONS! Wedding planning CAN really be a lot fun, especially if you have the tools to help you through it. Here is a list from The Woods on the top 10 things you should do FIRST. (In no particular Order)

1. Shout It from the Rooftops- Well, maybe not, due to safety reasons, but letting everyone know is the very first thing you’ll want to do! While you may feel like shouting it from the rooftops, there are other fun ways to let your friends and family know. Try a personal phone call, funny e-card, video on Facebook or better yet, in person!

2. Plan an Engagement Party- An engagement party is a great way to gather friends and family together to celebrate this exciting time. It’s also a great time to gather the troops and oftentimes friends and family will offer to help take care of specific duties or will volunteer to be on call for whatever you need! These parties can be as extravagant or as laid back as you like, the main goal should be just to gather together to celebrate this new chapter in your life.

3. Pick a Date- Whether you plan the wedding around your favorite time of year, after you finish another life accomplishment such as school or getting a new job, or when you feel you’ll be financially able to do so- picking the date will help get everything else in order.

4. Set Your Budget- Having an idea of your budget limit will help you set the rest of your budget. Oftentimes things will vary in the price you set in your budget, so be willing to be flexible and move things around as needed to stick within your budget.

5. Find a Reception Site- The reception site can set the tone for your entire wedding, so it’s important to find a place that you love and fits your style.

6. Get Professional Engagement Photos-Engagement photos are a great idea since you can use them for save the date’s, your wedding website, invitations and wedding guest book.

7. Find a Wedding Dress- This may not be as easy as it sounds, but it’s okay to be extra picky when it comes to your wedding dress! Your dress can act as a statement piece and is one thing guests are the most curious about when attending a wedding. This will be a great way to reflect your personality and tone.

8. Make a Wedding Website- Creating a wedding website is a creative way to keep your guests informed. All of your information about your wedding will be in one place, and since we’re an online society, it’s easy for everyone to access. Give directions, hotel accommodations, registry information, post your engagement photos and even give sneak peeks to your wedding style! Many wedding websites will help you create your guest list, allow guests to fill in their addresses and even RSVP. You’ll want to take advantage of this great tool!

9. Consider a Consultant-You may feel that having a wedding consultant is an “extra” that you don’ t want to spend money on, but they can help smooth out the planning process and offer suggestions you might not have considered. Even if it’s just on the day of your wedding, having a wedding consultant could be just the thing to ensure a stress free wedding day.

10. Start Your Guest List- While you don’t have to decide on your exact guest list right away, it’s a good idea to at least get a rough draft. Gather you and your groom’s potential lists, as well as your parents lists if they have close friends they want to invite. They may even help you remember those family members you haven’t seen in a while! Forgetting a guest can be an embarrassing situation, so you’d rather have lists overlap then forget a loved one.

Wedding Videography: Same-Day Edit

Something new and exciting in the world of wedding videography is a Same-Day Edit. This is something that one of my favorite videographers, Voila Cinematic, will now be offering to their clients. Here's what a same day edit from Voila Cinematic entails- the videographers shoot as normal all day on the day of the wedding. As they shoot, the footage is passed to an on-site editor and edited into a highlight film that is played for the entire wedding reception immediately following dinner. They bring everything including the HD Screen and projector. Just before the film is shown, the screen is seamlessly moved in and taken away immediately following the showing- so there are no decor eye sores through the entire reception! A same day edit is an extremely difficult project and one that truly requires a professional team!

The Wedding Showcase: The Hilton Orlando

Recently, I had the pleasure of attended The Wedding Showcase, hosted by The Hilton Orlando. I, along with a select group of local wedding planners, was treated to a weekend of pure relaxation and indulgence. Aside from touring the property which has recently gone through a $385 million dollar renovation, we were able to witness (first hand) the level of service that each guest experiences when having an event or staying at the Hilton Orlando. Their brilliant team of chefs thoroughly planned and executed each meal that was provided for us throughout the weekend. Everything was so unique....DELICIOUS....and definitely not your typical "hotel cuisine." (I think I gained 3 pounds in 2 days, just in case you were wondering). You can see from the photos below how much effort was put into this fabulous event. It was such a rare treat to be spoiled like this, especially at the start of the busy wedding season. Thank you so much to the Hilton Orlando!

Believe it or not, these are all ROSES. Crazy, right? The "Green Eye" rose is one of the most beautiful and unique flowers that I have ever seen! The David Austin roses have a soft, plush look and come in a wide variety of colors. I have heard that these are amongst Oprah's "favorite things." I love that!

Home Weddings and Events can be Expensive

Recently, I read an article on one of my favorite wedding blogs, Preston's Blog (by Preston Bailey) and knew that I had to share it with my readers. Since I have coordinated many home weddings, some of which have been published, I have many couples who come to me seeking help with planning their at-home wedding. Although I LOVE to do them, I always make sure that the couple is aware of what it will take to pull this off.

Preston Bailey explains it perfectly:

I’m always excited when clients want to have their wedding or event at their house. Using a private home for an event is often a dream come true: it’s unique, personal, and often rich with family history. However, many clients assume that hosting an event at home will save them money. The reality, unfortunately, is that home events can actually be more expensive than events at traditional venues. Why? Because, in most cases, you have to create everything from the ground up. A private home is not designed to be an event space.

For example, most venues already have tables, chairs, linens, cutlery, lights, etc…; all of which you need for big events. Private homes don’t have these items on hand, and that means everything has to be purchased or rented. So, the next time clients ask about having an event at their home, remind them about the costs of doing so. I still love home events, but I’m always sorry when clients are disappointed, because they were under the impression they were going to be saving money.

I've blogged it once and I'll blog it again, I LOVE THANK YOU NOTES. I really do. I don't think clients (Brides, Grooms, Parents of Either) know how much it really means to us wedding professionals to get feedback after the wedding or event is over. It reconfirms that we achieved what we were hired to do, plus gives us an invisible little gold star that we can wear around for a while. I can honestly say that I have kept every single "Thank you note" since starting Olivier Events. They are my treasures.....that's what the box I keep them in says anyways.

I just had to share the "Thank yous" that I received from Adam and Lindsay's wedding (the most recent one on our blog). Here is what Amy, the fabulous Mother-of-the-Bride wrote:

Ashly, I'm going to miss your emails! ......I wasn't sure about hiring a wedding coordinator; I thought I could do it myself. Lindsay & Adam: The Sandpearl Resort

Lindsay and Adam were recently married at The Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater Beach, FL. What a fabulous wedding this was! From the beginning, Lindsay knew that she wanted to use the bright color scheme of Chartreuse and Coral, which worked so well with this particular venue. The white decor elements that were used throughout the wedding added the perfect POP to these fun & fresh colors. Ian Prosser, of Botanica International Design Studio, completely delivered with the overall design of this wedding. Absolutely brilliant, as usual! In the end, Lindsay and Adam had the FUN wedding weekend that they hoped for (and deserved).

Chelsea and Sage's Bella Collina Wedding

Chelsea and Sage (whose engagement photos were shown in the previous post) were married at one of my FAVORITE venues, Bella Collina. The Tuscan-style setting located in Monteverde, FL served as the perfect backdrop for Chelsea and Sage's big day. I am a huge fan of doing an Engagement Shoot prior to your wedding. It allows you to become more comfortable in front of a camera lens and also better acquaints you with your photographer. This will eliminate any "camera shy" feelings that may arise on your wedding day.

Some of my recent clients have blown me away with the creativity in their engagement photos. Shemi and Tom (pictured below), opted for a racing theme because of the Groom's favorite hobby. Their wedding photographer, Jerry McGaghey shot these images at the industrial warehouse where Tom's race car is stored and maintained. Love it!

Real Wedding: Angie & Peter

Let me just say that, I LOVE GREEK WEDDINGS....especially this one! Angie and Peter recently said their "I DOs" in a beautiful church ceremony at St. Nicolas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs, FL. Afterwards, guests enjoyed an evening reception of dinner and dancing at The Renaissance Hotel at International Plaza. A local Greek band kept the festivities going until nearly 2am....definitely my kind of party!!!

Angie and Peter's wedding had the word STUNNING written all over it....starting with the bride and groom. It was so hard for me to choose which photos to blog because each one is just as beautiful as the next. Ian Prosser of Botanica International Design Studio took Angie and Peter's classic color scheme and made it beyond extraordinary. The flowers, the lighting, and the rich, textured linens looked like they were MADE for this ballroom!

If there is any couple who deserved a perfect wedding day, it's Angie and Peter. Hands down! They are both just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside (I know that is hard to believe, but THEY ARE). What an absolute pleasure it was working with these two..... Cady and Beau's Barrington Hill Wedding

Cady and Beau were the first couple to get married at the Barrington Hill Farm in Dade City, FL. This was such an honor for me as a coordinator and working with these two (and their families) was equally as gratifying. Cady and Beau are the type of "clients" that every coordinator DREAMS about....seriously!

This wedding oozed Southern Elegance; perfectly fitting for a plantation-style venue. Beautiful Earth tone colors and vintage lace accents were used throughout the reception space. Other unique decor elements included hand-made wooden benches (surrounding the dancing area) and custom-built bars that were created to resemble barn stalls. Guest dined on upscale comfort foods, sipped on specialty drinks served in mason jars, smoked personalized cigars from the Mobile Cigar Lounge and were sent home with mini pecan pie favors. And the fun didn't stop there! The parents of the bride surprised Cady and Beau (and all of the wedding guests) with an airplane fly-over, which displayed their Well Wishes in LED-lit scrolling text. Talk about a show stopper!

What an amazing night for an amazing couple. Thank you Cady and Beau for allowing me to be a part of it all!

When shopping for your wedding photography....

When it comes to purchasing things PRIOR to doing the research, I am guilty as charged. It is something that I am constantly telling clients NOT to do. With weddings (as opposed to my spontaneous gadget purchases) there are NO "returns." I am sure everyone can agree that weddings are too large of an investment to go into blind or uninformed.

Julie Brewer (the beautiful gal in the photo above) of Brewer Photography and Videography has provided some helpful information to consider when shopping for your wedding photography.

1. Light - Keep in mind that photography is defined as "the study of light." Light draws your eye exactly where we, as artists, want you to focus in an image. I use it to skim across the face of a bride in pre-ceremony, silhouette the bride in a beautiful doorway, or create harmony as light rims around a couple during portraits. Light should be both flattering and interesting - meaning that in my images you can point out exactly where the light is falling and how it is working to enhance the image. From pre-ceremony through the reception, I am constantly controlling and shaping light to bring something more interesting to the image.

2. Natural Posing - Most couples want a photojournalistic look, but can admit that they might not be the most comfortable in front of the camera. My goal is for your engagement and wedding images to focus on the relationship between the two of you. With a few prompts and tricks, I am able to get some relaxed, natural moments where you are completely focused on each other. And, that's really what your wedding day is all about, right? 3. Mature Compositions - Sophisticated and mature images are a result of conscious decisions to frame and compose images that have deeper meanings. Reflections, shadows, and layers are some of my favorite elements that delve beneath the surface of a wedding to the level where the less obvious stories behind an image are communicated.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER: The 5 Most Important Criteria By Julie Brewer, Brewer Photography & Videography

1. Quality - It's as simple as taking a critical eye to the actual images. Look for the way the photographer handles him/herself throughout the day's different scenarios. - Do they tend to have harshly lit images? - Do they flatter the bride and groom? - Is there ambiance? Consider indoor, outdoor, and evening images - Are the images in focus, crisp, and clear? - Do they have a lot of filters that will look dated in a few years? - Can you see the lace and beadwork of the bride's dress? - Is there an element of art in their work? Consider composition and framing All of this is within the photographer's control and you should expect and demand quality work. Remember that the techniques of refining quality come with experience, so you should expect to pay in line with the quality you will receive.

2. Style - Every photographer has a style...whether it is mainstream traditional or something unique they have refined. There are two things to consider when judging a photographer's style. - The first is simple...do you like it? Will you be comfortable with the way this photographer shoots you and your husband? - The second...do you want your wedding images to look this way? Some styles are edgy and trendy and might be great for a portrait, but you might not want your wedding images to be quite so time-stamped since you will have to look at these for the rest of your married life.

Style Questions - So what exactly is my photographer's style?

- Light - Perhaps THE MOST IMPORTANT question! Photography is the study of light. So, are the images bright and colorful, dark and moody, or is there inconsistency? Are receptions lit flatteringly and is the photographer in control of the light or are they at the mercy of the venue?

- Postproduction - Are the images almost bare...clean, consistent, colors appear as they would in reality? Or, are there lots of filters (and are they used in a way I like)? Do they alter the skin tones making them look warmer or colder? Are colors super saturated and un-natural?

- Posing - Do the couples look relaxed and natural? Are the subjects models or real couples?

- Composition - Are the compositions throughout the day mature? Is the subject's head in the center of every image as if the photographer just grabbed the shot or is the composition more mature...meaning did the photographer think beyond the moment to craft an image where beautiful light meets a natural moment and was captured in an interesting composition to tell a story? Often, looking at a photographer's blog or website will give you a deeper understanding of their style because it is a concentrated sample of their work at each event. Compare each event they show and notice the similarities and differences. Consistency is AS important as overall style. Anyone can have a "good day," but you want to make sure that for your photographer every day is a "good day."

3. Personality - Before the wedding, your photographer should be giving you advice on schedules, timing, lighting, and tips. If you don't immediately feel that they are knowledgeable and resourceful, then you should move on. On your wedding day, you will spend more time with your photographer than anyone else. They will be the third wheel. So, you want to work with someone you feel completely at ease with - that includes private moments, in various states of dress, etc. If they are very outgoing, you might consider that they will most likely be very much a part of your wedding day. If they are quiet, they might hang back and shoot more photojournalistically allowing you to have your moments without interference. After the wedding, you will work with your photographer for months while they edit your wedding and then you begin the print order and album fulfillment process. Do not underestimate the value of working with a photographer you 'click with.'

4. Reputation - Don't ask the photographer for references from past brides. No one is going to send you to an unhappy client as a reference, so those aren't worth much weight. Ask for referrals from everyone you meet in the wedding industry. Planners, venues, florists, bakers, and make-up artists know people on a personal level and can often judge their personality and ability to follow through. Keep in mind though that their judgment on quality is just as influenced by yours on marketing so reserve that judgment for yourself. Only you know if they are what you are looking for!

You don't have to have a full service wedding planner to get access to their Rolodex...if you hire a 'day of' coordinator, they will provide you with referrals, as well. Keep in mind that anyone can have one bad experience, but its the overall sense of reputation that you get from brides and wedding partners. Ask first, if the company is familiar (this will give you a clue to how long they have been in business). Then, if they have a reputation for follow through and longevity.

5. Price & Value - The bottom line is that you most often get what you pay for. Now, prices vary in different markets and can be influenced by the photographer's individual situation. For example, if a photographer is new in town and looking to build their business they might be less expensive. If a photographer is trying to shock people into building a reputation as a couture photographer, they might be incredibly expensive (but have very few bookings). If a photographer is full time, they might actually be less expensive (full timers must fill their calendars while part timers don't have the same pressure). Your main concern should center around not only the price, but also the value. Start by narrowing down your search based on the criteria above - quality, style, personality and reputation. From there, compare the pricing and decide who offers you the most value in their work.

One big tip...don't be concerned with the 'extras' you get in a package. You won't be happy if you sacrifice quality images so you can afford an album; you will just be stuck with an album full of bad pictures. Most photographers have payment plans and will archive your images so you can get the most bang for your buck by investing in the actual images and then working out the details on the albums and prints later. If you love the images, you will be more than happy to take your time purchasing the products and will be much happier in the long run.

What's your veil style?

There are so many decisions to make when it comes to weddings....including choosing the perfect veil. Prior to committing to this particular accessory, there are some things to consider. For starters, the dress. If your dress has heavy detailing, you may want to choose a simplistic veil, and vice-versa. Another thing to consider is how you want to wear your hair on your wedding day. Make sure that it is conducive to the style of the veil that you select. Your veil should also reflect the formality of your wedding. A chapel or cathedral length veil would work best for a church or formal wedding, rather than an outdoor or casual ceremony. The difference in these two veils is the length. Chapel length veils extend to the floor and three inches past the train of your dress, whereas the cathedral length veils extend at least six inches past the end of your train. Birdcage veils are becoming more popular by the day, and go hand-in-hand with "vintage" weddings. Other veil styles include Mantilla, Bubble, Butterfly cut, and the very common trend of wearing NO VEIL. So.....what's your veil style?

Solutions Bridal: WHITE Fashion Show

Last week, Solutions Bridal Designer House hosted their WHITE fashion show at one of the hottest venues in St. Petersburg, NOVA 535. Food, drinks, and FASHION....now that's my language! I love drooling over gowns by some of the most talented couture designers in the biz, such as Kenneth Poole and Badgley Mischka. Most of the gowns truly knocked my socks off, but there was one in particular that cast a spell on me. After the show, I just HAD to try the stunning (*sparkly*) Badgley Mischka gown on for size. No, I'm not getting married, but a girl can dream can't she? HAHA!

Jillian and Brian were recently married at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, FL. From the start, Jillian and Brian knew that they wanted the overall feel of their wedding to embody the elegance and old-world charm that is present throughout this breathtaking venue. The couple chose a soft color pallet of cream, gold and silver, which was subtly accented with a shade of pale pink. One of my favorite details of the reception were the menu cards which also doubled as a place card (shown below). Such a unique little touch- compliments of the lovely ladies of Not from a Box. And can we just have a moment of silence for the incredible floral masterpieces created by Dalsimer Atlas? I mean, WOW.

Speaking of WOW, I cannot tell you how blown away I was by the staff at The Biltmore. This venue truly gives their clients (and even a little ole wedding planner like myself) the star treatment. And that is exactly what Jillian and Brian deserved. I couldn't have asked for a sweeter couple to work with. It was the perfect day for an absolutely perfect couple!

After much anticipation, BHLDN (pronounced BEHOLDEN) has officially opened their "doors." The wedding/party collection was created by the same people who own Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People. No wonder everything is just TO DIE FOR.

Chris and Christina's beautiful Fall wedding

Chris and Christina's intimate Fall wedding took place at The Palmetto Club in Lithia, FL. After an evening ceremony on the lawn, guests enjoyed dinner and dancing in the beautifully-transformed ballroom. The amber-lit room was filled with rich textured linens, luscious over sized centerpieces, beaded glass chargers, dozens of candles, and various hand-made adornments at each place setting. The large feasting tables were set up in a U-shape around the dance floor, which provided the intimate setting that Chris and Christina were going for. The guests were treated to an array of delicious cuisine set up on chef-attended stations throughout the ballroom. Dinner was topped with mouthwatering wedding cake and a "SWEET" Sundae station.

It was truly a beautiful wedding for SUCH a beautiful couple (both inside and out). From the moment that I met Christina, I knew that we were going to have a blast together while creating her dream wedding. Christina allowed me to take her vision and totally run with it. For a wedding planner, feeling that level of trust is pretty euphoric. Although the entire experience was a memorable one for me, I will NEVER forget the way Chris looks at Christina. It's as if she had hung the moon and all the stars (while looking like a Victoria Secret model). Sorry- that was my best shot at describing it. HAHA! But in all seriousness, "the look" really put everything into perspective for me. I was truly reminded of what this is all about....LOVE!

I was ecstatic when I heard the news that one of my favorite stores (ANTHROPOLOGIE) is coming out with a line of wedding gowns and bridal accessories. How amazing! The line, called BHLDN, is scheduled to debut on February 14th through their online boutique. It is rumored that the first collection will include fifteen wedding gowns, along with party dresses, jewelry and other bridal pieces. I cannot wait to see EVERYTHING! Two weeks and counting......

Mirror, Mirror, on the....

I love the use of mirror accents in wedding and event decor. It gives a room such a vibrant and fresh feel. I'm not talking about the small square mirror underneath a table centerpiece (like they did in the "olden days"). Instead, combine those square mirrors to create a "runner" spread across a long table, or go all out with an entire mirror-top table. You can see from the photos below just how gorgeous that looks! Mirror vases, flower boxes, serving trays, furniture, and accent pieces can all loan it's beauty to a wedding or event of any style!

Greetings everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season! Things are finally starting to get back to normal after a busy month of weddings, events, and holiday celebrations. November and December brought some of the most amazing weddings and events that I have coordinated to date, and I am so excited to share those with you all. 2011 is looking like it will be another fabulous year for Olivier Events. We currently have some incredible weddings in the works that I am so honored to be a part of. I am also extremely proud to announce that I will be the MAID OF HONOR in my best friends wedding this Summer. (The love of her life popped the question Christmas morning). We are all absolutely elated and have already hit the ground running in planning their June wedding.

Wedding inspiration at Barrington Hill Farm

Love this simple, airy inspiration styled and shot at a horse farm. Ahhhh to be eating outside under spanish moss and chandeliers. It really doesn’t get old, these sorts of places. Jason and Jessica are getting married at Barrington Hill Farm a few months from now, which made them the perfect pair for this shoot.

The whole feeling is so warm and sultry and romantic. Definitely makes us want to plan a party here.

Okay, I know what you are all thinking...enough already! I swear that I'm not purposely dragging this thing out like a high school history lesson....there's just THAT much I want to share with you all. The Engage10 Farewell party was CAH-RAZY! The "chandelier of hanging champagne flutes, which were served to us by stilt-walkers," pretty much sums up the evening. As if the delicious dinner party wasn't enough, The Engage gals and The Breakers hit us with one hell of an after party. The food, the decor, the entertainment, and the company were all "out of this world." Thank you again to Rebecca Grinnals, Kathryn Arce, and the staff at The Breakers for one amazing event.

Engage10 The Breakers (Part 2)

Day 2 of Engage10 was filled with so many details that I absolutely LOVE! After a morning of education and inspiration courtesy "the industry headliners," we were treated to one of the most spectacular lunches EVER! The exquisite circular ballroom gave me the same feeling as I had when visiting The Vatican for the first time. The beauty of this room was just unbelievable! Then the music began and my heart almost skipped a beat. An amazing string quartet performed a dynamite play list throughout lunch which included some of my favorite artists like Coldplay and The Dave Mathews Band.

The Yummy "boxed lunch" was the most creative way to display the delicious lobster salad sandwich, tomato soup, truffle fries and devilled eggs. And it tasted just as great as it looked. The smock paper box (which I brought home with me) now holds all of my Engage memorabilia which sort of makes me feel like a stalker. The day ended with a dinner dine-around as well as a fabulous dessert (and dancing) party on The Breakers lawn.

Engage10 The Breakers (Part One)

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending my 2nd Engage event, which was held at The Breakers in Palm Beach, FL. I am being totally honest when I say that I DO NOT even know where to begin (which is one of the reasons why it has taken me so long to post this). It seems almost impossible to put into words what I experienced in just a few short days at Engage. Rebecca Grinnals and Kathryn Arce of Engaging Concepts (as well as the fabulous staff at The Breakers) put together one stellar program. Every single detail equalled PERFECTION!

The line-up of guest speakers read like a "whose who" of the wedding and event industry. Celebrity planners Mindy Weiss and Marcy Blum (both of whom I have looked up to for years) delivered humorous insight into their long-lasting careers in the biz. Event designer, Brian Ranfanelli, gave us the low-down on THE most talked about wedding this year. Chelsea Clinton's lil shindig.....you may have heard somethin' about it. Sylvia Weinstock, the "Queen of Cakes" gave us a design lesson with one of her edible masterpieces. She still remains as one of the most fascinating, entertaining and down-to-earth women in my book. And for those of you who are keeping tabs (sound of crickets) yes, that does make twice in one year for me and Mrs. Weinstock....woot woot!

I could go on for days and days about the fabulosity that each of the speakers brought to the table. There were dozens! I can honestly say that I took something away from each and every one of them. My fellow "Engagees" oozed passion, and I feel absolutely honored to be amongst this group. I can't wait to see you all at the next one!

Anemones anyone?

If I had a dollar for every time a person asks me the name of "the white flower with the black center" I'd be one happy camper. The answer: anemones. Aren't they beautiful? Although they are the perfect pairing for any black and white wedding, anemonies also come in a wide range of bright colors. The black button center gives it a dramatic and sophisticated feel. Anemones are so feminine, chic, and down right GORGOUS!

Shannon and Robbie get married in Longboat Key, FL

I am so excited to share this wedding with you (the world) for so many reasons. I knew that working with this family was going to be a treat in itself because I had the privilege of coordinating Shannon's sisters wedding last year. I cannot describe in words just how much I love this family! They are all just so down-to-earth and incredibly easy to work with. Robbie, his friends, and family members definitely fit the same mold.

Shannon and Robbie's Summer wedding took place at the Hilton Longboat Key. After a beautiful ceremony on the beach, the couple and their guests celebrated with dinner and dancing under a beautiful white tent. And let me tell you....a-celebrating they did! In the years that I have been coordinating weddings and events, I have never NOT wanted one to end, until this one. I could have stayed for days watching this lively group dance and party. Robbie and his groomsmen had me laughing hysterically throughout the entire weekend. By far this wins my "Funnest Wedding" award!

The Navy and Pink color scheme that they chose for their wedding is one of my absolute favorites! Shannon and Robbie also wanted to incorporate subtle beach elements into their casual affair. The wedding ceremony included a unity sand ceremony (using navy and pink sand) which signifies the joining of two lives. The sandcastle 'motif' was used throughout their wedding invitations, ceremony programs, menu cards, and wedding cake. The Grooms cake was a replica of the Boca Grande Lighthouse, a place that Shannon and Robbie visit quite frequently.

Despite the heat, it was the perfect wedding day for Shannon and Robbie. Congrats and Best Wishes!!

It is so rewarding to be recognized for doing what you love to do, and working hard at it! This article in The Ledger newspaper was such a nice surprise. We are extremely flattered to be one of the five companies listed!

Today's brides agree: five Polk County wedding vendors are among the best to use if you're getting married on Florida's west coast.

The Knot, a one-stop online resource for wedding planning, http://www.theknot.com/, asked thousands of recent Florida brides to rate their vendors for its Best of Weddings 2010.
Lake Ashton, a gated community spanning Lake Wales and Winter Haven, ranked as one of the top wedding reception sites, alongside Don Cesar Beach Resort in St. Petersburg and the Tampa Marriott Waterside.

Robyn Lynne, the Lakeland bridal and formalwear shop, was listed for bridal salons; and Flowers by Edith, also in Lakeland, was listed for wedding florists. Entertaining Designers and Olivier Events, both also based in Lakeland, were mentioned for wedding planners.

Tricia Adams, director of activities and community relations for Lake Ashton, said being recognized by The Knot is a huge honor and does a lot to boost reputation.
"The Knot is the ultimate resource that brides are looking at for everything about their weddings," Adams said. "It enhances our image."

Frannie Ambrose, Lake Ashton's banquet manager, works closely with bridal parties. She said they are attracted to the setting, customized menus and the Grand Ballroom. "When I meet with the bride, I give my word that everything is going to be perfect," Ambrose said. "I treat it as if it were my own daughter's wedding and I attend each and every wedding." Despite its lack of advertising, Lake Ashton hosts an average of 20 weddings each year, Ambrose said.

Vicki Waymyre, owner of Flowers by Edith, said she was blown away by the honor of being included on The Knot's list. "We just felt very honored to be listed because we've worked very hard to build our business," Waymyre said. She added that it was even more special because the business was the only florist listed from Lakeland. "A bride wants that," Waymyre said. "She wants to know she can have confidence in the person providing the flowers for her wedding."

No one from the other Polk businesses named on the site was available for comment Thursday.

There are SO MANY unbelievable honeymoon locations to choose from. Here's a list of some of the TOP Honeymoon locations that we have compiled (in no specific order).

Fiji
Fiji has it all if you are looking to fill that image of white powder beaches with beautiful palm trees, green mountains sweeping to the sea, warm tropical breezes, and lots of secluded resorts scattered among its 300+ islands.

Greek Isles
The Greek Isles offers the best of the new world with the charm of the old world. Santorini, a definite top pick for honeymoon locations, has the most spectacular views and stunning sunsets.

Italy
Italy is one of the top picks for Europe honeymoon locations. No wonder, it's the land of Amore! From the Northern Alps and lake country to Rome and the Almalfi Coast, Italy has everything for a romantic and classy honeymoon. My personal favorite Italian location is the Isle of Capri...to die for!

One wedding trend that is not fading away any time soon is the use of brooches. It is a perfect way to add a touch of glam to your wedding. Brooches can be placed on a wedding gown, bridesmaids dresses, shoes, hair pieces, clutches or handbags, invitations, wedding cakes, guest books, ring pillows, centerpieces, floral bouquets, and more. Depending on the item you wish to enhance with a brooch, weight and size need to be considered. A heavier brooch would not work for invitations, hair pieces, or cakes.

Brooches should always match the style of your wedding. If you are having an elegant, formal affair, you may want to use a brooch with pearl adornments. If you are having a fun, modern event, you may want to look for a brooch that has a lot of "bling" or color to it. Vintage or antique brooches would perfectly accent a Southern-style wedding. Although brooches are small in size, if done correctly, they can make a huge impact on the overall look of your wedding. It truly is ALL about the details these days.

Carnival, Circus Baby Shower

Along with several of my favorite friends/industry pros, we created a magnificant baby shower for Aymee and Paul Brace, who also work in the wedding and event industry. While discussing the baby shower over a plate of Elephant Ears, the theme sort of fell into our laps (or at least the powdered sugar did). We knew that a Carnival/Circus themed baby shower would be perfect for Aymee and Paul, who were "all about" some fair food!

The shower took place at the Palmetto Club at Fishhawk Ranch, which is actually where Aymee and Paul were married. The room was filled with lighting and custom draping to resemble the inside of a circus tent. Guests enjoyed an assortment of carnival foods such as mini burger and bar-b-q chicken sliders, mini hot dogs, shoe string fries and sweet potato fries, fried mac n cheese bites, Churros with powdered sugar, cake lillo-pops, gourmet popcorn, snowcones, cotton candy, cake, and much much more! Our MOMosas and Baby-Bellini's were also a huge hit. The female guests Oooo'ed and Ahhhh'ed over the adorable baby gifts, while playing baby bingo. The males took full advantage of the carnival games set up around the parameter of the room, which included the diaper toss, ring around the bottle, the crane game, balloon/dart game, and a life size Wii Carnival game. To top off their sugar high, guests were given caramel and candy apple favors as they departed. What a great way to welcome beautiful baby Kellan into the world!

2010 NACE Experience

Last week I attended the 2010 NACE Experience in Austin, Texas....AMAZING! For those of you who do not already know, I am an active member of both the Tampa and Orlando chapters of NACE (National Association of Catering Executives). This organization is geared towards all professionals in the wedding, event and hospitality industries. It really has been such a great networking tool for me and has connected me with so many of the amazing vendors that I work with today. The "Experience" is an annual conference for NACE members throughout the country. Educational seminars, key-note speakers, networking lunches/dinners and a market place/trade show are just some of the highlights that took place over 4 fun-filled days. Our Tampa chapter was nominated for "Best NACE meeting" as well as "Chapter of the Year." Although we did not take home either trophy THIS year, it was such a HUGE honor to be nominated!

Since there is so much that I want to share, I have decided to break it up into several posts (plus, only some of the photographs are accessible at this time, HeeHee). The Opening-Night Gala took place at the historic Driskill Hotel (which is absolutely beautiful). The theme was Rhinestone Cowboy...very fitting for Texas. As you can see from the photos below, it was such a neat event and an absolute blast. Stay tuned for more posts on this unbelievable experience!

The latest color combinations we LOVE!

Choosing your wedding colors....now THAT'S a task! This decision will determine the look and feel of every aspect of your wedding. First, brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Look in your closet, make-up bag, or home decor for inspiration. Chances are if it is present in your everyday life, you aren't going to get sick of it during your wedding planning or afterwards. Bridal magazines are also a huge help in coming up with your wedding colors. Make sure you absolutely LOVE them. Next, do some research. Browse through Google images of previous weddings in the same or similar colors to see if you do indeed LOVE them. Then, make sure your vision can be logistically played out. Fabrics, flowers, paper, etc. may be difficult to locate in certain color shades. Although you want to be original, try your best to avoid any colors that are entirely uncommon. A good way to do this is to visit a few websites that sell bridesmaids dresses to see if any are offered in your colors. Also, shades of ribbon at your local craft store will offer quite a bit of insight on this. Lastly, and most importantly, make sure your color scheme is YOU!

I really do think that I have the best clients in the world! Receiving post-wedding Thank You notes from the new Mr. and Mrs. is the real icing on the cake for me. I just wanted to share a couple of the many sweet notes that I have recently received.

We wanted to thank you for helping to make our wedding day absolutely perfect. I didn't think that a perfect wedding was possible...but I cant think of any other word to describe it. Our family is still talking about it. We often find ourselves smiling just reminiscing about our day....we cant wait to see our pictures! My parents were so happy with the work that you did. Thank you for all of the vendor recommendations and of course all of the work you did to make it all come together! We will remember it forever.

Ashly, THANK YOU for all of your help before, during and after the wedding. You were such a huge help and I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it. Barrington Hill: An amazing new venue

Barrington Hill is situated on 50 acres of lush rolling meadow dotted with Grand Daddy Oaks in Dade City, Florida. The plantation-style farm offers numerous event spaces (both indoor and outdoor) throughout the property to host your wedding ceremony, reception, or event. I was absolutely floored when I visited Barrington Hill last week. It has such a natural Southern Charm that is quite rare in the state of Florida. If you are looking for a laid-back, vintage, or farm-like setting, then this is the place for you. I am over-the-moon to be planning an upcoming wedding at such a beautiful venue!

A Classic St. Augustine Wedding

Amy and Jason were recently married in the beautiful city of St. Augustine, FL. The ceremony took place at the historic Lightner Museum and the reception took place at The White Room. I have to say that Amy and Jason were one of the most laid back couples that I have ever worked with. I heard the words "whatever you think" on a regular basis, which was like beautiful music to my ears. Amy and Jason both have the most loving families who were completely involved throughout the entire planning process. Amy's mother and mother-in-law were both present at every one of our planning appointments....and have actually grown to be the best of friends over the past couple of years. I just love this!

From the start, Amy knew that she wanted a classic black and white wedding with a beautiful, romantic feel. We incorporated elements of black lace into various elements of the wedding such as the invitations, the wedding cake, the table accents and even the dance floor embellishments. Hundreds of candles filled the entire reception space and was topped off with a beautiful crystal chandelier over the center of the dance floor. After a sparkler send-off in the cobblestone streets, Amy tossed her bouquet from the back of the horse and carriage then rode off to their amazing honeymoon suite. Not only did the wedding turn out to be absolutely gorgeous, it was the perfect "party" that Amy and Jason were hoping for.

Joanna and Brian are married! La Playa Beach and Golf Resort - Naples, FL

Along with one hundred of their closest friends and family members, Joanna and Brian traveled from Minnesota to Naples, FL for their dream destination wedding. Joanna chose a very elegant color scheme of white and gold which coincidentally matched the beautiful decor throughout La Playa Beach and Golf Resort. After a lovely Catholic church ceremony, Joanna and Brian's guests were treated to a fabulous cocktail hour on the beach. Guests were encouraged to make themselves more comfortable by visiting the shoe caddy, which was stocked with flip flops of all sizes, fresh towelettes, water, a sand rug, and chairs. It was a huge hit! The sit-down dinner took place on the veranda outside of the ballroom. This beautiful area sits along the inter-coastal and is where many dolphins and manatees call home. (So CUTE!) After a delicious meal, the ballroom doors opened and the after-party began. Dave Conley's Element Band had EVERYONE on their feet the entire night. What a perfect wedding weekend for Joanna and Brian.

While in Biloxi last week, I stumbled upon one of the best bands that I have ever heard. No Idea (from my hometown of New Orleans) seriously ROCKED the house. The Knot Market Party, held at the amazing Waldorf Astoria in Orlando, was definitely no exception. Heather Snively (an exceptional coordinator whose work I truly admire) of Weddings Unique planned the entire soiree for The Knot. As you can see from the photos, there was eye candy galore! The brand new Waldorf Astoria was the perfect location for this event, offering breathtaking indoor and outdoor spaces for us to enjoy. What a treat!

When I say that this was one of my absolute favorite couples to work with, I truly MEAN IT! Couples like Elizabeth and Jeremy are the reason that I do what I do. With the help of the brilliant Ian Prosser of Botanica International Design Studio, Elizabeth's family's country club (Cypresswood Golf and Country Club located in Winter Haven, FL) was transformed into their dream wedding location. And just when I thought this story couldn't get any better for me...I am currently working on Elizabeth's sister's wedding which will take place in Longboat Key this June. Shannon and Robbie are just as amazing and down-to-earth. I am beyond excited for their laid-back beach bash this Summer!

I could not think of a more soft, romantic, timeless, color scheme as this one! Raisin and Oatmeal seem like they were made for one another. Ashley and Rob's Southern Farm Wedding

Ashley and Rob had their dream wedding this past November. The private residence which also serves as a working farm was the perfect location for this joyous occasion. As I mentioned in my "sneak peek" post of this wedding, it was one of my absolute favorite weddings that I have coordinated. I had such a blast working with Ashley and her parents on every last detail....I almost felt like part of their family. It was so heartwarming to see how involved both of Ashley's parents were throughout the planning process. What a perfect wedding day for such a perfect couple. Best wishes to Ashley and Rob!

The wedding ceremony took place in front of a beautiful lake in the middle of the property. Ashley and her father's grand entrance on a vintage horse and carriage was one of the many tricks we had up our sleeves. Ashley and Rob's favorite song- Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks, made her entrance even more emotional and meaningful. Rob's father, who is a pastor, officiated the ceremony.

This wedding was all about the details! As guests entered the reception area, they were asked to write a little note to the new Mr. and Mrs. on a vintage Lakeland postcard, which were collected in a mailbox nearby. Guests were also treated to a photo booth with an endless supply of silly props to choose from. The cookie and milk favors were a huge hit with both the children as well as the adults. Rob was truly surprised and completely "in awe" with his grooms cake that showcased his two favorite hobbies: The Atlanta Braves and playing the drums. After dining on the most delicious food and dancing under the stars, the celebration was concluded with a spectacular firework show (another surprise to the guests). Ashley and Rob departed in style in a vintage hot rod car.

Forrest and Bethany's Wedding in Paradise Island, Bahamas

We were so thrilled to coordinate Forrest and Bethany's December wedding at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas. This couple came to us in the very beginning of their planning process after coming across photos of a previous wedding that we coordinated in The Bahamas. I could not have asked for a more down-to-earth couple to work with. Although we did not actually meet until just a few days before their wedding (since they live in Los Angeles), I felt like I had known them for years. I knew right off the bat that we would get along great after hearing about all of their nieces and nephews that would be taking part in their ceremony. It turned out that these were the most adorable children that I have ever seen and Forrest and Bethany were just as starry-eyed over them as I am with my nieces. I also loved how involved Forrest was throughout the entire planning process. I will never forget an email that I received from Forrest telling me that as long as he is with Beth and their families he knows that it will be a fantastic event. TRULY MOVING!

Forrest and Bethany incorporated many Eco-friendly elements and chose a "Tree of Life" theme for their ceremony and reception. In the photos below, you can see some of the ways that they incorporated this theme into their wedding. I loved the welcome bags that they provided for their guests upon arrival, which included: Bahamian punch, Bacardi Rum, Rum cakes, various snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, and a weekend itinerary.

One local vendor that I would recommend to any couple looking to wed in the Bahamas is Mathew Sweeting, who officiated Forrest and Bethany's wedding ceremony. He truly brought the celebration to life by providing insight, spirituality, and an overall caring demeanor. I cannot say enough about the "Island Preacha." I would also like to thank Brewer Photography and Videography who came through once again with such beautiful photos of the occasion. I am very excited to see the amazing video that they captured as well.

Congratulations to Forrest and Bethany on such a beautiful wedding. I wish you both the VERY best!

An artist in action

It is pretty seldom that you can see your wedding vendors "in action" before your wedding day. Well, in this case- you can! Phillip Lloyd is one of my absolute favorite photographers (and a dear friend to me). I know from personal experience just how comfortable Phillip makes you feel in front of a camera. I am the most unphotogenic/camera-shy person that any of you will ever meet-I promise. I literally RUN when I see a camera pointed at me. Phillip took the anxiety right out of me, and actually made 'having my picture taken' completely enjoyable. (See for yourself....)

This is such an important trait to look for in your wedding photographer. You want to feel comfortable, instructed, and reinforced that you are giving your photographer what he or she needs to take unbelievable photographs. Check out this short video of a true artist at work.

With the New Year right around the corner, everyone is discussing their predictions on the biggest wedding trends for 2010. Here are the trends that I expect to see throughout the upcoming year.

Mismatched Bridesmaids Dresses

It can be very difficult to find the perfect bridesmaids dress that is going to please all of your bridesmaids. Let's face it, every one's body type is different and certain dresses just look better on certain people. Why not allow your bridesmaids to pick out which style (from a particular line and color) that suites their body the best. I personally think it looks great and will surely make your bridesmaids LOVE YOU! Take it a step further and mix and match different colors and patterns into your bridesmaids attire. Internet involvement

Personal wedding websites are a great way to relay all of the essential information to your guests. From registry information, hotel, travel, updates, and more, your guests can stay informed with just a click of a button. Couples will also use websites such as weddingwire.com to create their guest lists, room layouts, seating charts and more.

Documenting the day

Although we are still in a "recession," I predict that the days of picking out the lowest priced photographer or videographer are LONG GONE. Today's bride and groom see the value in having amazing images that they can cherish for a lifetime. Unfortunately, there are no do-overs with this; you can't go back and relive your wedding day again if your pictures or video did not turn out as hoped they would. Instead of shopping around for the lowest prices, the 2010 couple will seek out the most talent photographer and videographer whose work fits their own personal style. Added Activities

It is always great to add some sort of extra entertainment to your wedding day to guarantee that your guests will have the best time. Photo booths have been popular for a few years now, and will continue to be big throughout 2010 (everyone loves them). Slide shows are also a hit because it allows all of your guests to personally witness the evolution of your love and relationship. Comedians or Dance numbers are perfect performances to have during the dinner portion of your reception. Activities such as a fortune teller or a caricature artist would be a great addition to your cocktail hour.

Stationery

Matching stationery throughout your wedding ceremony and reception really shows your guests just how much thought you put into the details of your wedding. And believe me, they will notice! Your ceremony programs, favor tags, menu cards, place cards, table numbers, signage, napkins, etc. are all stationery items that can coordinate and add a whole new element of decor to your wedding. Green or Eco-Friendly

2010 will deliver many brides and groom who want to share their passion for the environment with all of their wedding guests. These couples will serve organic foods, will use biodegradable paper items, and will have recycle bins for bottles, cans, and any other containers. Plant or flower seeds are just one of the many Eco-friendly items that could be given out as favors.

Retro Weddings

Vintage weddings will remain quite popular throughout 2010 as well but will be joined by the fun/festive RETRO style wedding. In a retro-wedding, you will see many colorful patterns throughout the linens, attire, stationery and wedding cake. Other retro elements could include headbands, teased (big) hair, strands of beads, Polaroid cameras, tea-length dresses (with a little "poof" under the skirt), gloves, and a Volkswagen bug or van as the get-away car. Cutting-edge Colors

This is the big one that everyone wants to know about. In recent years, chocolate brown has definitely made it's mark; pairing with colors such as pink, baby blue, aqua or lavender. Well, waive bye-bye to brown and say "Hello" to it's replacement: Slate gray/pewter. If you have followed my blog from the VERY beginning, you will know just how thrilled I am for this trend. For 2010 I see gray/pewter paired with so many amazing colors such as pale pink, yellow, aqua, fuchsia, and many more. I also see purple continuing it's popularity.

The latest wedding day send-off

Although sparklers are still quite popular, there is a new product available for your grand exit or wedding day send-off. For years, sky lanterns have been used in Asian festivals, symbolizing your troubles floating away and being replaced with good luck and fortune in your future. The lanterns (made from biodegradable paper) are lit from the bottom using the same principle as hot air balloons to float away in the sky. Sky lanterns come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can even be personalized with your names, wedding date, or wedding colors. You can also have your guests write their own well wishes to the new Mr. and Mrs. directly on the lanterns. In this case, I would suggest having a few cameras on hand so that you can cherish some of the personal messages that your guests wrote to you. Sky Lanterns come with safety instructions, however, it may be wise to designate a few responsible adults who can assist your guests with the lantern send-off. Can't wait to try this one in person......

Brides Florida Magazine & Brides.com 2009 Market Party

The Brides Florida/Brides.com event was a HUGE success! Over 400 local event professionals were treated to a night of networking, fun and PURE indulgence. From the moment the guests walked into T. Pepin's Hospitality Centre, they knew that it was going to be one spectacular party.

The event design and overall decor was beyond brilliant thanks to the fabulous designers as well as the top-notch event rentals that were provided. I personally loved the color scheme of pewter and plum and know I will be seeing a lot more of it. The custom-made ceiling accents were such a huge hit, as were the hundreds of floral arrangements that completely brought the room to life.

I can honestly say that the food and drinks absolutely blew my mind. Guests were welcomed with a Passion Champagne cocktail to kick off the celebration followed by several speciality drinks including a Yuzu Luxe Sour garnished with black sea salt and a Perfect Plum Martini that matched the room decor. Stations of Lobster Mac N Cheese, Maple and Bourbon Glazed Short-ribs, Shabu-Shabu, Pan-seared Black Grouper and Assorted flat-breads (not to mention the slew of passed hors d'oeuvres) filled the entire event space. The food definitely didn't stop there! Freeze 321, a nitrogen ice cream system provided the perfect scoop for both the chocolate hazelnut won ton and the black Forest lava cake. A separate dessert station of mouth-watering bite sized delectables were as beautiful as they were tasty.

At this event I finally got to experience TEXT LIVE, as mentioned in one of my previous blog posts. It was so much fun and allowed guests to really get involved in the event. Hands down, the show stopper of the evening was my personal surprise to the guests- BLACK VIOLIN. People are STILL talking about this performance and will be for quite some time. Be sure to check back for the video of the performance and other highlights from the event.

I cannot even begin to thank all of the fabulous vendors that made this event possible. It was an honor to work with each and every one of them!

Becoming a Wedding Planner

I came across this article and could not post it quick enough. Now I know that great minds think alike, but it seriously felt like the person who wrote this was reading my mind. It showcases all of the "hoopla" that comes along with the territory of owning a wedding coordinating company. The content of this article feels like a reoccurring conversation that I find myself having with many of my wedding planner friends. And yes, I said friends, meaning that I speak to them on a daily or weekly basis. I almost take the bait when these aspiring planners email me to let me know how great my website is, and how my company stands out by a land-slide....only to find out that the same person has emailed every single one of my wedding planner friends (and probably dozens more) with the same template-of-an-email. Comical!

Sadly, I am sure at some point in my life I have written an email or two using the "DON'T" tactics listed below. I have, on the other hand, completed the "DO's" which have gotten me to where I am today. For all of my blog readers who are brides-to-be, there are many great points to address when scouting a potential wedding planner. The most important (in my opinion) are experience and reputation. For the aspiring planners who are reading this post, I salute you for completing step 1- research. Knowledge is key. And on a side note (you should probably read the article first) if you are going to have a mentor, make sure to find someone who is worth all of the time and hard work that I know you will put into this. Having a "bogus" mentor could actually put you back two steps. With that said, best wishes throughout your journey!

Becoming a Wedding Planner: by Saundra of Planning Forever

For some reason, I have been receiving a plethora of questions from aspiring wedding planners. This industry is hot, hot, hot right now with approximately 6-7 cable shows regarding weddings and all their glory. I can see how enticing this business looks.

Here’s an example of what I might get asked (in one week, no less).
How much are your packages? Can you send me your contract? How did you get started? Are you hiring? I want to start my own business, how did you? Which online course is best to take? How do you market yourself? Where do you find clients? Can I job shadow for free? How do you get found in search engines?

I love that more people want to do this business. We need more professional planners out there to help raise the bar and standards.

Notice I said, professional planner? A prof is someone who has experience in event planning. If you have planned your own wedding and your BFF’s, this does not make you an experienced professional event planner. Just like naming and designing a business card does not make it a business.

There is so much information on how to become a wedding planner that I am going to do a three part series from my perspective. Keeping it real and giving you some personal insight, and not selling you anything. So here goes.

1. GET EXPERIENCE. Your own wedding does not count. Or any friend’s wedding. If you cannot find a planner to work for, then search out the hospitality industry or another vendor in the industry. Hard work and real-life experience will beat out reading books or taking a course. I have noticed that many aspiring planners are unwilling to accept an unpaid internship or pay for job-shadowing experience. That is a route you may have to look into.

2. PLAN IT OUT. You need seed money to get started. BEFORE you search for clients. BEFORE you network with vendors; have a business strategy. You will need an attorney for contracts, your business plan developed, liability insurance, a business license, know your tax liabilities, and more! Be willing to shell out some bucks.

*Part Two*

Why is it so important to have real-event planning experience before you tackle other people’s weddings?

For one thing, working with other wedding vendors. The real truth is many vendors don’t welcome wedding planners into the picture with open arms. I find it is because of past experiences with the newbie-planners-with-business-cards that have zero to little experience; suddenly making important decisions on the wedding day and reception.

Caterers, DJ’s, and photographers that have been in the business for many years tend to have little patience with these newcomers as they tend to be more of nuisance, than a help. Can you blame them?

Not because the newbie-planner is not earnest. Not because they are mean. But because of their lack of experience and gusto to direct the entire day and other vendors. Isn’t that what a wedding planner does, after all? Hmph. Invariably mistakes are made and it causes others to do double work.

Trust me, if you don’t have all your wedding vendors behind you during an event,you are looking at a very frustrating, loooong and exhausting day. Vendors can figure out how long you have been in the business by talking to you for five minutes. They are sizing you up.
Always remember wedding planners do not create weddings. It is a combined effort of a team of wedding professionals that create weddings.

I have made some great alliances with well-respected vendors in this area; but make no bones about it; it took dozens of events and proving myself (and my company). Now they know if they see planning…forever events on the BEO; the vendors know things will be taken care of properly.

*Part Three*

I hope you understand why you need to have experience first before you plan a client’s wedding. We clearly outlined some of the pitfalls here when you are “learning” on someone else’s special day. So HOW do you get this experience?

It can be a vicious circle. It’s like trying to get credit extended to you but you don’t qualify because you have no credit history. Huh?

Obviously the best experience would be to work for a professional event planner. However, it’s not the only way; hospitality and catering would probably give you a more well rounded picture. But let’s focus back on working for us planners. There are some Do’s and Don’ts when approaching planners for potential jobs.

As always, I will get straight-to-the-point.

1. Do Not email us through our web inquiry form on our website. That area is strictly for potential clients. Imagine the disappointment to find people looking for work.

2. Do send an email requesting information if we are hiring.

3. Do Not tell us this has always been your dream job. As some planner’s will mimic; “It’s my dreeeeaaaaaaam to be a planner”. This raises a red flag. Can you imagine interviewing at a corporate job and telling the HR person it’s always been your dreeeeeam to be an accountant? I don’t think so. And get back to me if your dream is to be on your knees picking up a broken glass and mopping up spilled liquor on a dance floor at 1AM.

4. Do send us a resume with real job experience that is applicable to our industry. We get really excited to read that.

5. Do Not call us right away. A follow up phone call in a few weeks if we received your resume and email is fine. But email is almost always better. Please remember, you are one person out of dozens that contact us each month.

6. Do be open with starting at the bottom and working your way up. This may include internships or smaller part-time duties, easing you into the business. Businesses in general are looking more into internships; so don’t be surprised when that is an offer.

7. Do Not offer to partner with our company if you have no experience or established business in general. Yes this happens.

8. Do ask questions of other planners (go out of your immediate area if you aren’t getting a response). But ask the right questions. What are the pitfalls? What’s the worse part of your job? How hard was it for you to break into the business? You already have the iconic viewpoint of event planning, so at least do some research on the negatives so you can have a clear picture.

9. Do Not ask a professional event planner for copies of their time lines, checklists, budgets, contracts, packages, etc. And please do not copy their style of their website. There are 50 states out there, with most likely an event planner in each state with some online presence. If you want to do research; do so from another planner across the country. Not 40 minutes from you.

10. Do understand that we can’t hire everyone. This is a unique kind of business. Because of the creativity involved, it is treated more like a hobby instead of a professional business by many newcomers. There is a smaller market for our services, but we are gaining. Slowly.

*The Finale*

I know if you are dead set on this career path, I cannot scare you by telling you how much hard work it is. Glamorous moments are slim and the reality is that you are on your feet for 12-14 hours AND working weekends (more importantly Saturday evenings without your S.O. or hubby). You need a very understanding family. And you need to be willing to miss out on a lot of fun personal events.

Nope, I won’t touch upon those things because they are not pleasant to talk about.

What I WILL say that this is one of the most challenging and rewarding careers I’ve ever done (and I have a background in various sales and marketing areas). It’s new everyday and I have the ability to make an impact in someone’s family; helping to create positive memories that will last a life time. It’s so special and I (and my other coordinators) take this to heart. And that is what drives us every single weekend (even when our feet hurt terribly).

Olivier Events teams with Brides Magazine & Brides.com

I am so excited to share my big news with you all! I have recently been asked to coordinate the Brides Magazine of Florida and Brides.com market party. "Each year, Brides Magazine of Florida and Brides.com partners with industry influentials and valued advertisers to host an award winning upscale cocktail party. These events allow thousands of key decision makers the opportunity to network with other local event professionals to form powerful business relationships that help nurture and grow their businesses." (Straight from their mouth-not mine). Although I have less than 5 weeks to pull everything together, I am absolutely pumped! Stay tuned for updates on this industry event that is sure to set some serious trends.

Sylvia Weinstock- The Queen of Cakes

Last week I truly had one of the most exciting days in quite some time. Sylvia Weinstock- the Queen of Cakes- attended our chapter's NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) event. I even got to sit directly next to her during lunch- but that's beside the point. (Smiley Face) The event was held at the Renaissance hotel at International Plaza in Tampa. The room was absolutely breathtaking thanks to the fabulous NACE executive board and the team of vendors that they put together for this event.

Sylvia Weinstock, (who is known for making wedding cakes for celebrity clients including Donald Trump, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez, just to name a few) offered fascinating insight on her personal and professional life. We were even told the history behind her infamous trademark- those glasses. I could not believe how down-to-earth and hilarious she was. My absolute favorite thing that came out of her mouth was when someone asked how she deals with difficult/nervous brides. In her slight "New Yorker" accent she replied "I tell them to HAVE A DRINK;" then continued with "it's only five hours of your life." What fantastic advice!

Beautiful bride and bridesmaid bouquets

There are so many things to consider when picking out or designing your perfect bouquet. Whether it is a brides bouquet or a bridesmaid bouquet, the flowers should compliment the color of your dress. In my personal opinion, a bold red bouquet tends to clash with a stark white gown. If you have your mind set on carrying a red bouquet here are some things that I would suggest. First, soften the bouquet by adding small hints of complimenting colors such as apricot, mango, celadon, or deep yellow. If you have not already chosen your dress and you know that you want to carry red flowers, go with a dress that is a pearl or champagne shade.

A bridal bouquet should match the overall feel of your wedding. If your ceremony will take place on a beach, you may want to skip the jeweled adornments and opt for a casual look. If you are having a vintage inspired wedding- soft, romantic flowers are probably the route to take. A good florist will know all of the right questions to ask to make sure that your bouquet is perfect for you and your wedding. And since you are putting so much thought into these beautiful bouquets make sure to use them as additional decor throughout your reception space.

South Seas Island Resort: A Perfect Place for your Destination Wedding

Over the summer, I was invited down to Captiva Island for a two day tour of South Seas Island Resort. I cannot even begin to tell you how impressed I was with EVERYTHING. First of all, the staff there is absolutely amazing. Each member of their "team" was so accommodating, passionate and just plain fun to be around. I, along with nearly a dozen other coordinators, was welcomed with snacks and sangria before hopping onto a trolley for the first portion of the South Seas Island Resort tour. It was clear that they knew the way to my heart when we were taken to the on-site candy shop for some afternoon sweets. YUMMM! The day also consisted of a pool-side party of live music, fajitas and specialty drinks, then ended with an evening dinner reception that was beyond delicious. I even saw a family of manatee hanging out near the marina- so awesome!

In my opinion, South Seas Island Resort is THE ideal venue for destination weddings of all sizes. The resort is home to the most unique and beautiful indoor & outdoor Ceremony and Reception locations that South Florida has to offer. It stretches across two miles of quiet spots, beautiful beaches, and private banquet facilities. Other amenities include boat and fishing excursions; bicycle rentals; a quaint pizza parlor; trolleys throughout the property; several large swimming pools; beautiful hotel rooms, villas and condominiums; tennis courts; and endless options to make your wedding (or vacation) an unforgettable experience.
